Transforming TRS into a green campus

I’m happy to report that we are transforming TRS into a green campus. Under the guidance of Sriram Kuchimanchi of Smarter Dharma, we have taken several steps to ensure decreased waste, reduced consumption and more optimal utilization of resources. Some examples:

Segregation and dry waste management ensures that we are now sending out 30% lesser waste to landfills

Smart cafeteria changes have resulted in –

• Reduce food waste from an avg. of 36kgs to avg. 14kgs

• Reduce daily oil consumption from 5ltrs to 3.5ltrs

• Increase in consumption of healthy food options like organic rice, par-boiled rice, millets, etc

We have setup public medical and e-waste collection initiatives – thus ensuring these do not end up in landfills.

Smart wiring changes have been done at several locations.

For example by redoing wiring such that switches are present for individual light setups, we are ensuring reduction of unwanted lights being turned on.

And by replacing lights in an elevator (CFL to LED), we reduce our energy footprint by 6 times!

Given the garbage-landfill disaster currently prevailing in our city, such initiatives are not just timely but critical. We feel good that in our small way we are helping to slow the progress of global warming, and in some measure to prevent the recurrence of such disastrous recent events as Hurricane Sandy and Cyclone Nilam.
