Alzheimer’s Day

I just read in the Times of India that the number of 60 plus people in India crossed 100 million in 2010 and is expected to cross 177 million by 2020. So we are no longer just a nation of young people! The same article said “ 100% rise in dementia cases in 25 years, say doctors”. Age and dementia go hand in hand.

We recently attended an amazing presentation by Mark Inglis, at a remarkable evening hosted by Mindtree, to which we were invited by our Forbes interviewer, writer, Chief Gardener and new found friend, the delightful and engaging Subroto Bagchi. This was an evening which will remain imprinted in our memories for long. Mark is a double amputee who lost his legs at 22 to frostbite while mountain climbing, and incredibly went back years later to climb Mount Everest on artificial legs. His story was beyond inspirational – he elevated us (literally) to a different, visceral plane of aspiration and effort. Along the way, he gave lessons of how to overcome obstacles, which made any regular human task seem utterly trivial. And provided to us lessons in leadership teamwork, communication and self-realization which were poignant in the extreme, given that most of them were gleaned in near death situations at an altitude to 28,000 feet. Altogether a unique experience. Many thanks, Subroto.
